Relief work following the Japan Tsunami

In 2005 Professor of Community Mental Health, Mervyn Morris, was appointed as an adviser to the World Health Organisation to help modernise Sri Lanka’s mental health service.

Between February 2005 and June 2006 he visited the country on a monthly basis to carry out his role. His work began just after the horrendous Boxing Day tsunami that left parts of south east Asia devastated.

Here Professor Morris, who is Director of Birmingham City University’s Centre for Health and Social Care Research and also Director of the Centre for Community Mental Health, talks about his experiences. He argues that after such a disaster victims may need practical help rather counselling to help them come to terms with their losses.
